“We scored early, and that put us into a pressurised situation because we knew that our opponents were going to try to get it back to one-all,” he explained to Saints Player at full time.

“We didn’t play as well as we wanted to, but we got the result we wanted. We were able to withstand their attacks, so we’ve learned how to execute a certain phase of football today.

“We have to keep trying to establish how we want to play football, and I think we did that today.

“I am very happy for everyone involved with the club and all of the fans, but we’ve only just started – we need to keep working as hard as we are right now.”

“Before we started the season, we said it could be difficult.

“We’ve seen a lot of cases around Europe with teams not used to playing in Europe, that they struggle with having to play on a Sunday.

“I can only say now that we have done well in all the games we have played after the midweek games.

“I thought some players could be tired, but I really didn’t see that. Southampton, for the first 20 minutes, were the better team, but after the goal, I think we dominated the whole game.

“We created three chances in the first-half, and in the second-half, we dominated from the first until the last minute, but maybe not creating the same amount of chances.

“The negative part of the loss is that, in recent games, we have been severely punished for a few mistakes, and in some games we need too many chances to score. We have to be a little more convinced that we can score.

“In some games, to score a goal, we need four or five chances, so we need to make that percentage a little higher because, as we’ve seen lately with the opponent we play against, they score two out of three, or two out of four chances.

“We have to try to improve that because we do create many chances in all of the games – even against the very, very good teams.”
