If You Were Garry – Burnley (Home)

Premier League football returns to the Liberty for the first time this season with the Swans on the crest of the wave that was created by the season opening win at Old Trafford last weekend. An unexpected win in many quarters but one that we will not want to cancel out by not beating Burnley this weekend.

There is a very strong argument that the team almost picks itself for the game on Saturday but there are still possibilities for change that lie ahead of the manager who ponders his team against the side that were promoted from the Championship last season.

Of course – as there was last week – there are some decisions that I do not see him needing to spend too long over as Fabianski, Williams, Shelvey, Sigurddson and Bony I think provide the backbone of the team at the moment and will be the first names on the team sheet.

You can probably add quickly to that the names of Ki (with Leon still injured) and Rangel which gives you 7 of the 11 selections that will start the game and brings us now onto pondering our options.

Firstly the wide men. Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge got the nod to start last week with Dyer replaced in the second half by Montero who made his Swans debut. Without a doubt that was the right decision but will Garry stick with it this time around or is there an argument that says Montero’s pace could offer us an additional pace option at home. I’m not sure that we will make the change but I do think as well that it is only a matter of time before Montero starts a game but Rotherham on Tuesday night I think is the most likely for that with maybe a league start a week Saturday?

At the left back position I would almost certainly have said Neil Taylor as we did last week but the performance of Tiendalli when he came on at Old Trafford and that could be enough to earn Dwight a start. I’m going to stick with Taylor though in this selection but not sure that I have called that one right.

Finally, who will partner Ash in central defence? Jordi Amat did not put a foot wrong last week and in normal circumstances this would not be up for debate but we have just added Federico Fernandez to our squad and that means that he could easily come straight into the side this weekend. However, I think the signing – which was announced on Wednesday – may have come too late to make the change for Saturday so for me Amat stays in, Fernandez is on the bench but it is surely only a matter of time before he moves into the starting line up?
