For many I am sure that he would be given the fact that a very large percentage of our current fanbase will probably have less than ten years experience watching the club. For those of us that go back further we have others to compare him to – I remember watching in awe as Bob Latchford for arguments sake scored goal after goal and then of course there was Toshack as well albeit briefly as a player.
For the older generation there are many more to choose from so it is a perfectly valid question for you to answer via our site poll at the end of this article.
Wilf has appeared just 70 times for the Swans in his time here but has grabbed himself 34 goals in that period of which 25 have come in just 43 Premier League starts. It is a well documented fact that he was the division’s leading scorer in 2014.
It is also enough to persuade the current Premier League Champions to table a massive bid for him that could not only allow us to strengthen the squad but also to make the stadium expansion that we so crave but is it enough to earn him the title of our greatest ever striker.
For me Wilf has been immense and I would give him the title purely for the fact that he is doing it now. It is always difficult to compare people from different eras but in my almost 40 years watching the Swans he is the greatest in terms of what he does. In terms of entertainment I would always give the title to Lee Trundle but for goalscoring ability at the highest level alone Wilf for me gets the yes vote.
However, he had further competition from some of the players I mentioned above and that will be a consideration I am sure for anyone else answering this question.
So what do you think? Is Wilf the greatest? Vote below in our site poll and if your answer is no why not leave your choice and reasons in our comments box at the bottom of the page.
