Friday night’s 1-0 win over Belgium has Wales comfortably in pole position for a place in a major finals for the first time since 1958 and with the games home and away against Belgium out of the way and Cyprus looming large on the horizon, it is theoretically possible that Wales could qualify when the next two games have been played.
But Ash is right to spark caution in amongst the team as he shared his views on the post match huddle as the Cardiff City Stadium erupted in celebration on Friday night.
“When we came together on the pitch after the final whistle I said to the lads that the main thing we have to do now is stay focussed – we’ve come too far to lose it and the ultimate job isn’t done.” Williams told Wales on Sunday
“We’ve put ourselves into a great position to qualify but we’re still only on 14 points and that will not get it done.
“There are more games to be played and that was my message straight away: ‘Boys, enjoy tonight but let’s not think we’ve done it because we haven’t’.
“There are still four games to be played and points there to win. It’s important to try and get it done as quickly as possible and not to leave it to the last game or to chance. It’s only when we get there we can relax.â€
Wales results on Friday night has also placed them highly in the World Rankings and will ensure they are in the top seeds when the next World Cup qualification draw is made next month.
