Oldham And Crewe Chasing Cornell?

Cornell was released from the Swans last season having made just one appearance for the club he joined having graduated through our youth system.

Loan spells at Hereford and St Mirren did nothing to give Cornell a chance at first team football as he found himself third choice for most of his career here behind the likes of Dorus De Vries, Michel Vorm , Lucasz Fabianski and Gerhard Tremmel.

But following his release it looks like he could be in line for a move to Crewe after a move for Paul Rachubka, who finished the season deputising for the injured Garratt, was deemed unlikely by Steve Davis.

However there is still reported interest from Oldham to consider as well although Crewe look like they are the most likely destination.

Speaking before his release at the end of last season, Swans boss Garry Monk said : “David is at a stage of his career where he has done well and trained with the first team for a couple of years, but he now needs to play games.

“I have spoken to him about it and he is in a similar situation to me when I was at Southampton.

“I probably stayed there two years too long because I thought I would have the chance to break in to the team but didn’t.

“I don’t want David to waste any time. When you first train with the first team it is great, but now he needs to play proper league football and if we find the right opportunity for him then we cannot stand in his way.”
