Goals from Andre Ayew and Bafetimbi Gomis gave the Swans the point but a host of chances against their ten men hosts could have made that all three but it wasn’t to be.

But what did we learn from the Chelsea game and what can we take into next Saturday’s clash against Newcastle at the Liberty?

1. Jefferson Montero is a world class winger

What a performance from Jeff in this game. I remember him tearing Arsenal and Aston Villa apart last season at the Liberty but this was Ivanovic at Chelsea and he was brilliant. He showed exactly why a winger should take on his man and he created the first and was a constant dangerous threat all afternoon. Don’t ever change Jeff it is brilliant to watch.

2. We have been practicing corners

Jonjo Shelvey was taking some brilliant corners yesterday and that suggests to me that we have done quite a bit of work on the set pieces during the close season. Incredibly he almost scored twice direct from the corners and he created great chances for Gomis (first half) and Fernandez (second half) We have long since been critical of how bad we can be from corners and if yesterday was anything to go by we will score more goals as a result of them this season.

3. Bafetimbi Gomis can score plenty

I think Gomis comes in for plenty of unfair criticism at times but the one thing we know he does is score goals. He has a brilliant ability to get himself into the goalscoring positions that he does. He may not take every chance that comes his way (what striker does?) but the goals will always come if you get yourself there and Gomis does.

4. Garry Monk is a brave manager

There will not be too many managers that go to Stamford Bridge this season and play the kind of attacking game that Monk sent his side out to do. The simple fact that we had more shots on target than any Premier League side has done in the 12 years Opta have done their stats tells you much. It takes a very brave manager to take the game to a side as good as Chelsea and we should appreciate just how lucky we are to have him.

5. There are some more great days ahead

OK, Ok I know it is only one game but there was enough evidence on the pitch today to suggest that this is going to be another good season. I remember being at Oldham on the opening day of the 2007/8 season watching us lose but the performance told us then it was going to be a great season and it was as we walked the division. Of course we won’t walk the division this time around but what we will do is upset the big boys and get more than our fair share of wins. Exciting times ahead.
