McLaren Warns Monk Off England Job

It is widely speculated that should England fail in France next summer that there will be a change in charge of the team and given their record at recent international tournaments you would assume that is more a case of when they fail rather than if.

It is the name of Garry Monk that some are linking with the job given the fact that he is currently one of the most successful England born managers in the Premier League so that almost makes the link natural and it is a link that Monk likes as he has previously admitted that of course he would love to manage his country.

And today he will come face to face with someone who has held the national manager’s job albeit for a very brief point of time. And if anyone would understand just how quickly things can change when you manage England then it is Steve McLaren.

He was one of England’s hottest managers when he left Middlesbrough to take up the role in 2006 but only around 18 months later he was out of work again and deemed the ‘wally with the brolly’ as England failed to qualify for Euro 2008 under his command.

It doesn’t take much for the national press to turn on a manager especially when he is so much in the spotlight and it took a spell out of that spotlight managing clubs abroad for McLaren to rebuild his career and he eventually returned to the Premier League this summer to manage Newcastle.

รขโ‚ฌล“Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขd definitely advise Garry against England,รขโ‚ฌย said McClaren.

รขโ‚ฌล“Garry would be the first to admit heรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs not ready for that yet. Having said that, though, you can never tell in football. Heรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs very focused and doing one job very well. Heรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs come through ups and downs.

รขโ‚ฌล“Itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs too soon, youรขโ‚ฌโ„ขre going to have to sustain it for quite a few years and get that experience. Heรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs doing very well at Swansea. Heรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs signed a long contract and heรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs at a good club.”

Monk himself believes that McLaren was not given enough time when he was in charge of England รขโ‚ฌล“We can be quick to kick English managers. Steve McClaren had earned the right to manage England, he has an exceptional reputation within football. He says maybe the England job came a little too early and it didnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt go so well but he was quickly kicked in the teeth and had to rebuild himself abroad,” he said.

รขโ‚ฌล“Just because it didnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt go well in that short period, it doesnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt mean heรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs a bad coach. We should look after English managers more and not discard people too early.รขโ‚ฌย
