How Did They Do…? Sunderland

Sunderland 1 Norwich City 3

The mass of empty seats around the Stadium of Light by the hour mark on Saturday spoke volumes for how Sunderland’s season has started.

Fresh from their 4-2 opening day defeat by Leicester City they found themselves 3-0 down to Norwich by the time that clock had ticked to the hour mark and the boos that rung out around the ground makes you wonder just how much Dick Advocaat is already regretting his decision not to retire at the end of last season as he originally planned.

Russell Martin opened the scoring fortuitously, inadvertently turning the ball home after Costel Pantilimon parried a Robbie Brady shot.

Steven Whittaker slammed home a second after a one-two with Wes Hoolahan, who also assisted in the Canaries’ third from Nathan Redmond after the break.

Duncan Watmore then scored a late consolation on his Sunderland debut.

The result leaves Sunderland at the bottom of the Premier League table and already facing another season of relegation battles

Dick Advocaat: “Two games two defeats, we did not expect. We have to discuss with the players how we go on.

“It was the same in pre-season and you hoped it would change but it is not changing. Myself as well, I am responsible for that, no doubt.

“They can talk and I can talk. Together we have to find out if we can find the solution, otherwise we have no chance.”
