Shelvey is currently with the England squad preparing for tomorrow’s game against San Marino and Tuesday’s game against Switzerland where he is expected to go into the role vacated by Jack Wilshire who missed out through injury.

And the player who has reignited his career in the last eight months knows that some good performances could lead him not just to play these two games but to cement his place in the squad with the Euro 2016 finals just around the corner.

Shelvey could become the first player to represent England whilst at Swansea this weekend and that has happened because he has calmed his game down and concentrated on what he does best and that is playing football.

He admits though that he is not everyone’s cup of tea but it is to his credit that he has changed the way he approaches the game so much

Shelvey said: “I can understand why people don’t like me. I’m a bit like Marmite – you either like me or hate me.

“But if you get to know me, you’ll realise I just want to win on the pitch. If you met me off it, you’d find I’m totally different.

“But even on the pitch I’ve changed my ways. I don’t have as many rows as I did before.

“There’s no need to row. I was a bit immature before, but I’ve realised if things are not going your way, there’s no point moaning about it.

“You’ve just got to make them go your way. You can’t keeping having rows

“I’ve watched my mates play in the Sunday League and it happens to them. It happens at every level, but you have to control it. I think I’ve done that in the last six months.”

The sending off at Old Trafford was some time ago now but he still remembers what happened afterwards with Fergie “I was a bit silly. I pulled him aside afterwards and apologised to him and he was spot on with me.

“He said, ‘No, I like it. It shows you’ve got a bit of balls about you’. It was silly to do that, but it’s under the carpet now.”
