Deeney – We Dealt Well With Shelvey

Shelvey was back at the Swans after playing in both England’s two qualifiers last week earning his second and third cap after his recall to the side after some hugely impressive displays for the Swans.

It is clear that people are noticing the performance levels of Shelvey these days and it is a huge compliment for him that teams are changing their style to face him. What it means for us though is that other players need to change what they are doing in the game and help break the shackles put on Shelvey by creating space for themselves and giving the opposition other things to think about.

That did not happen yesterday as the players were pretty much all on an off day and that meant that the Hornet’s change of plan worked perfectly and gave them their first home goal and first win of the season in the process.

“I enjoyed myself, obviously the shuffle we had in formation was to make sure that we could defensively deal with Jonjo Shelvey, which we did well” said Deeney.

“The only problem was after we had attacked, I needed to get back quickly to defend, but we did well and the partnership between me and Ighalo worked well today.

We’ve come close on few occasions, the only one we haven’t really is the City game, but other than that we have done really well

“After the first-half, I thought it was going to be one of those games where we had a load of chances and we would draw the game.

“We did well though, and thankfully I got the assist for Ighalo to score.”
