Planet Swans ArchivesWith new double yellow lines being added to some of the roads around the Liberty there are already issues on matchdays with the stadium capacity at 20,000 but if that were to be extended to 27,000 then at present those problems would get worse.
There is a small railway station at Landore and ever since the stadium has been opened there have been suggestions that the station should be considered for re-opening as a way of getting fans to and from the ground more effectively.
Mike Hedges, AM for Swansea East does wonder if this is an option as talks over expansion continue “Landore had a small station that was in use until the early 1960s,” he said. “It had a small platform and people were able to catch a train into Swansea from it.
“The basic platform is there and whilst a large train could not stop there, a smaller train could.
“The station is well within walking distance of the football ground and it would allow passengers including away supporters to get off and go to the ground without needing to go into Swansea.”
A Welsh Government spokesman said: “As part of our National Transport Finance Plan we have committed to developing a criteria to assess if there is justification for opening new or re-opening railway stations in Wales.
“We will be seeking to maximise funding opportunities with the rail industry to fund sites which meet the criteria. Landore is included in the locations to be assessed.”
