Swansea City 0 Arsenal 3 – Missed Chances Cost Swans

The most clear cut of those fell to Bafetimbi Gomis who was unable to convert a perfect one on one chance created by Jonjo Shelvey during the first period. His time delaying on the ball allowed two Arsenal defenders to close in on him and in the end there was no shot at goal offered which was the biggest disappointment.

The Swans were the better side in the first half and looked always likely to produce something with Montero, Ayew and Shelvey in particular at the heart of most of what we were doing and Gomis also forced a save from Cech when set up by a Montero cross.

It has often been an accusation made of the Swans that we do not make the most of our periods of dominance and today was certainly one of those occasions as we lost our second successive home game but this was much different to the disappointment of two weeks ago.

The Swans were putting in a performance and can certainly consider themselves to go into the interval level with a couple of curling efforts the closest Arsenal came to scoring in the first half.

The second half was a different story though with Olivier Giroud heading unchallenged into the net early doors and Arsenal were ahead against the run of play. It wasn’t the moment though that the Swans heads dropped as we fought back well from that early setback to the half.

Sigurdsson, Ki and Ayew all came close to levelling the scores which was still within our capabilities at 1-0. The second though was a sucker punch and a controversial one at that too. Fabianski went for a high ball into the are and seemed to be impeded by two Arsenal players but as the Swans stopped, Arsenal carried on and Kevin Friend gave the goal to double their lead.

Two soon became three but by that time the Swans were a beaten side and Arsenal were away with all three points.

A 3-0 home defeat normally doesn’t carry much to be positive about but this was a decent performance by the Swans who were made to pay by not making that first half dominance count.

Norwich and Bournemouth are up next and we need to get some points under our belts again.
