Burnley 0 Swansea City 1 – Fer Strikes To Give The Swans Win

Fer was on hand to pouce after Fernando Llorente’s header was wel saved by Tom Heaton but the goalkeeper was powerless to stop the Swans man hammering home what turned out to be the decisive goal.

It was just what the Swans deserved after they spurned some good chances to score prior to this but we were – as ever – grateful to Lukasz Fabianski at the end of the game as he saved well as the home side looked for an equaliser.

The Swans had gained the lions share of possession and chances during the game but had been unable to break down a solid looking Burnley defence that looked set to secure a point on their return to the Premier League after last season’s promotion.

Leon Britton captained the side following the departure of Ashley Williams in midweek and the long serving midfielder settled into the team as if he had never had a summer break. The thing for me though is that Jack Cork and Leon are too similar and it is difficult to accommodate them both in the same side – a point that I think was proved when Sigurdsson came on and Fer dropped back with the midfield looking more dangerous.

That danger was helped by the introduction of Jefferson Montero who caused Burnley no end of problems down the left hand side of midfield and it was from one of his excellent crosses that the goal came.

With Montero and Barrow running the flanks this season the Swans could cause no end of problems to better defences than the one belonging to Burnley and Frankie should be encouraged at all times to play the two of them together.

At the back Amat and Fernandez started the first of what is likely to be a long partnership this season, that is unless we move into the transfer market for a new central defender before the window closes.

Llorente definitely offers us an aerial threat up front and he played well enough but you would expect Borja to come into the side next week for his debut considering his club record fee.

This is a great start to the season for the Swans though and just what we needed – if we can build on this and get a second win against Hull at the Liberty next weekend then it could be a very good season ahead indeed.

Nice start!
