Who Does He Think He Is Kidding?

A remarkable turnaround in form coupled with Hull’s implosion at exactly the wrong time saw us secure a Premier League position for the seventh successive season at the weekend and it is reasonably clear that we need to make some substantial changes to build on these escapes before we end up like a Sunderland or an Aston Villa where eventually the trapdoor opens.

However, the Chairman believes that it would be “dangerous”s to make wholesale changes as he told the BBC “I don’t think it needs a big overhaul in the squad, I think that’s always dangerous.”

To people watching this season it is reasonably obvious that we do need an influx of new talent and a clearing of some of the deadwood ignoring the obvious fact that Paul Clement has worked wonders with what he had available to him.

A good January transfer window was a start and we need something similar this summer to ensure that we have competition for places and a squad that is not following the pattern of recent years and getting gradually weaker by the window.

We all fully understand the financial pressures of the Premier League and the extortionate wage bill that all clubs have to face on a weekly basis but quite simply as well we have to invest in the playing squad or those challenges become bigger because of the massive drop of income that anybody relegated has to bear.

“I don’t think there’s been many an occasion at Swansea City over the last six years in the Premier League when players have left because we’ve wanted to transfer them,” said Jenkins.

“And I think that will always continue as finances will dictate and we’ll do our best to make sure that better players want to stay with us.

“Sometimes we don’t satisfy everybody’s wishes, but we’ve got to try and work within the financial situation we are in and parameters we’ve got.

“We’ll always try and do that and make sure the club is financially sound and to me that’s first and foremost.”

The last statement is a valid and true one but to claim that the squad does not need an overhaul is the one that will attract the attention today and add to the criticism that is already flying in the direction of the Chairman.
