This Is Getting Silly Now

Reports surfaced yesterday in his homeland that stated “Ki Sung-yueng of Swansea City returned to Korea last week to join training ahead of this week’s crucial match against Iran in the final round of Asian qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“Ki, who had knee surgery in June after a qualifier against Qatar, had been expected to miss Korea’s last two qualifying matches, but turned up Friday unexpectedly in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, where the national team players are preparing for the match against Iran.”

Ki is a bit like the player we have forgotten all about this season with him not around for much of pre-season and clearly not having played a part in the season to date.

It is one thing getting an injury but then flying halfway around the world to join up with your national team just seems wrong and something that the club should clamp down on.

I completely applaud his desire to be part of wanting to qualify for a World Cup finals but I cannot see that the travel has done his injury any good.

An official at the Korea Football Association said, “Ki is still recovering from surgery, so it will be technically difficult for him to play against Iran on Thursday. At the very least, he is determined to play in the away match against Uzbekistan on Sept. 5, so we’ll see.”

For a player who has never really been more than a bit part player during his time here you would assume that he would want to drive a club career first and foremost but let’s see what happens on his international duty and go from there
