The news we didn’t want to hear

Well it was to be entirely predictable and it has been news that we expected to hear for most of the season but it seems that Trevor Birch is to use his extensive knowledge of the Swans finances to try and prise Joe Rodon away from the club at a bargain price for Spurs.

Reports surfacing today suggest that Spurs value the Welsh international at ยฃ7m which frankly is a joke on a day when Norwich sell their prized central defender for almost four times that money.ย  The Swans valuation is said to be nearer ยฃ18m for a player who has also been tracked by several other Premier League sides this summer.

It is the involvement of Spurs and Birch though that has to become the biggest worry.ย  Birch will know the Swans financial position inside out and also the viewpoint of the majority owners in terms of their need to sell our prized asset to try and balance the books which is desperately needed even before you factor in the loss of income caused by the current pandemic.

There is probably little doubt that there will be a deal to be done somewhere within here and possibly one that sees Cameron Carter-Vickers return to the Liberty as a replacement for Joe and to hopefully maintain a solid defence that has seen us concede just one goal in our four league games to date.

Despite the best efforts of Sky Sports though there is no panic for Spurs (or Swansea for that matter) to complete the deal tonight as the window remains open for another 11 days to get it completed and it does seem likely now that Joe will have played his last game for the Swans – all we can hope now is that the negotiation skills of Winter are better than those of Birch and Levy.
