Dismiss the Cooper Derby talk

Once again we have the Twitter rumour mill being generated by the same desperate tweeters who are now linking Swansea manager Steve Cooper with the vacant Derby job – in my view you can dismiss it as soon as you read it.

On one hand, you have a club in the top six having moved rapidly in the right direction over the past few years following relegation and playing some football that is right in line with your general philosophy.

On the other hand you have a side bottom of the table, clearly chasing the Premier League buck at all costs and making some poor decisions largely based around the signing of a former England captain at the end of his career who effectively said his best days were well behind him when he left the Premier League for MLS and then decided a move to Derby was the best thing.

So it is somewhat of a surprise when you read that Cooper is being linked with a move to Derby.ย  However, when you realise that the link is journalist Alan Nixon then there is no surprise and of course Derby would be interested but that doesn’t mean it is something that is about to happen.

It still scares me how people turn to journalists and ask them questions and then hang on their every word.ย  ย Let alone a journalist who relies more on Twitter followers than the accuracy of his journalistic skills (skills being a loosely used term)

Even when you read the replies like the one below it tells you the guy knows nothing about this but he is passing himself off to be full of knowledge and people are failing to read what is actually in front of him.

Cooper will be a man that interest’s Derby.ย  Of course he would be but there is a massive leap between interest and approaches and even the fact that Cooper would consider it.ย  The Swans boss is building a reputation of playing football the right way and developing young players to do it.ย  That is almost the polar opposite of Derby’s philosophy as is backed up by the Rooney signing.

Any manager that is heading to Derby will have to deal with the ego of the former England captain who has just about no credentials but has been placed in charge of their next game.ย  Tells you all that you need to know about what the club wants and what role Rooney will play with any new manager.

It’s a sad state of affairs that these things happen but it is the world of Twitter and people who have a desire in life to appear to be “in the know” but the reality is they very rarely are.ย  ย The old saying of “throw enough shit against the wall and some of it will stick” is true enough with journalism and people like Alan Nixon will forget every time they are wide of the mark and live off the rare occasions they get things right.ย  And in a desire to know whats happening people ask them questions like the one above and not see that it isn’t being answered with anything other than a guess.

This isn’t a statement from a position of knowledge but Steve Cooper will not be heading to Derby.ย  He will not speak to Derby.ย  Derby will not approach us to speak to him.ย  They will make an appointment that will suit their philosophy and Steve Cooper simply doesn’t fit that.ย  In my opinion.

What do you think?ย  Is Cooper a serious contender for the Derby job?ย  Share your views and comments below or via the forum topic on this article which can be found here.

  1. I think you need to be a little more respectful to Derby and if you are going to write about the club get your facts straight. You calling out Nixon and I agree with your comments is a little hypocritical when you cannot get your own facts right

There is nothing worse than a pompous ill informed football fans who has an inflated view of his own importance
