Much has been written and said about the Swans midfield in recent weeks but it has become clear that one player we certainly missed was Korey Smith who made his first start since injury in the midweek win over Stoke City.
Smith has been an absentee since January although a couple of substitute appearances coincided with the wins over Coventry and Nottingham Forest but it was the start that showed what we have been missing.
Without Smith, the Swans midfield has become disjointed and not as impactful on games as we have become accustomed and, as a result, more pressure has been put on a defence which has become uncharacteristically leaky with seven goals shipped to Huddersfield and Bristol City alone.
The good news is though is that Smith is back and believes he is fitter and stronger than ever and he is expected to line up tomorrow afternoon when the Swans look to move into the top two with a win over Middlesbrough at the Liberty.
โItโs frustrating when you pick up an injury, particularly when the teamโs doing well and pushing near the top of the table,โ said Smith.
โBut everyone is playing their part, and whoever comes in has to do a job.
โIf you do pick up a knock, then you work hard on your recovery and make sure youโre ready as soon as possible.
โBefore I came here, I had a few years of bad injuries. Last year I managed 22 games, but Iโve already played 26 times this season.
โOn a personal level I feel Iโve brought something to the squad. My team-mates, coaches and fans can see what I bring too, and I really appreciate that.
โI feel great. I feel stronger than ever, and fit and sharp. Thatโs a credit to the sports science team and the physios here.
โItโs a great feeling to be back on the pitch and helping the boys out. Hopefully I can contribute a lot more in the remaining games.โ
