No shock as Middlesbrough boss Warnock fined

It was not shock that Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock was fined after his post match rants at the start of this month after he watched his side beaten at the Liberty thanks to a last minute penalty from Andre Ayew.

Warnock was unhappy at what he believed were decisions that all went against his side and suggested that the Swans would get promotion with the ‘right referees’ even with a remark that Steve Cooper could be calling in favours from his father (former referee Keith Cooper)

On the award of the penalty that decided the game, Warnock had said immediately afterwards โ€œWe have had a few of these, you saw the penalty the other night at Stoke City, never a penalty in a million years and they won the game so by that reckoning they will get promoted if they get the right referees.โ€ย  (you can read Warnock’s full post match comments here)

Warnock was charged by the FA soon after the game and yesterday was hit with a ยฃ7,000 fine with the FA statement reading “Neil Warnock has been fined ยฃ7,000 following multiple breaches of FA Rule E3 that followed Middlesbrough FCโ€™s EFL Championship match against Swansea City FC on Saturday March 6ย 2021.ย

“The manager admitted that comments he made during post-match interviews constituted improper conduct in that they question the integrity of the match official, implied bias, were personally offensive and bring the game into disrepute contrary to FA Rule E3.1.ย

“An independent Regulatory Commission was subsequently convened and imposed an appropriate sanction. “

  1. You choose not to mention the disallowed goal in your article. One of the poorest referee decisions you’re ever likely to see!
I wonder what happened to the referee after such a poor game?
Standards certainly need to improve. I’m all for fast tracking ex professional players. People who will actually understand how the game is played.

    • It wasn’t a disallowed goal. Rightly or wrongly, the whistle was blown before the ball was struck so the ball was dead before it was struck and where it ended up was completely irrelevant. If it had missed the goal it wouldn’t have been a goal kick, if it had deflected off a defender, it wouldn’t have been a corner, if it had been handled by defender it wouldn’t have been a penalty and if it ended up in the net it wouldn’t have been a goal. The ball was not in play.

  2. The referee was demoted to League 1, the following weekend. I think that says it all about his performance, in addition to the referee you conned at Stoke!
