Considering the Norwich City job would have been “lunacy”

Russell Martin was clear in his belief when he opened up with his thoughts on being linked with two jobs in the international break – at former clubs Norwich City and Rangers.

As Daniel Farke was sacked and Steven Gerard moved on from Rangers to take over at Aston Villa it was the name of Martin that was linked with both jobs although certainly in the case of the latter of the two clubs it was firmly denied that they were interested.

Logically the Norwich City link never made any more sense than a former player linked with a managerial vacancy and it proved to be true as they appointed Dean Smith as a replacement for Farke shortly after his own sacking from Aston Villa.

But the Swans boss was clear in his views that just three months into his time in South Wales it is not the time for him to consider moving, something which he said would be “lunacy” to even consider at this stage.

“It is what it is,” he said. “It’s just two jobs that have come up where Iโ€™ve played previously. Iโ€™m in a job Iโ€™m so happy in, in a place Iโ€™m so happy in. My family enjoy it, the coaching staff enjoy it.

“I spoke about it being all in, so for us to even contemplate leaving after three months would have been lunacy.

“So there was nothing in it for us. I was getting texts and messages and all sorts.

“I guess it shows weโ€™re doing something right that weโ€™re getting linked with other jobs. But I pay no attention to it. We’re really happy here. Really focused with what we’re doing. We feel thereโ€™s so much potential here over a period of time.

“We just need to keep growing. Keep improving. I think weโ€™ve got a really exciting group of players that are just giving us everything we can ask for.

“We just win some more games, and ignore the noise whenever it comes along.”
