Scotland call up on cards for Paterson? Are West Brom interested?

The form of Jamie Paterson will not have gone unnoticed in football circles and, if Mail Online is to be believed today then a Scotland call up could be on the cards for the player who has impressed hugely this season..

He has eight league goals and four assists to his name already this season and is striking up a hugely productive partnership with Joel Piroe as they have now notched 18 goals between them this season.

When he joined from Bristol City in the summer few would have expected the impact that he has had and it now seems that it could mean others are sitting up and taking note of what appears to be a very shrewd signing.

The Mail reports that West Brom – amongst other Championship clubs would be interested in a January move for the player who signed just a one year deal when he arrived in South Wales.

The publication also reports that Russell Martin – himself a former Scotland international – has made national boss Steve Clarke aware of his eligibility which, maybe ironically, could even lead to him playing against Wales for a place in next year’s World Cup.

There are a few things to bear in mind here

  1. Paterson is in the form of his career but there is nothing to say that a change of club would see that form continue
  2. If he is on the verge of a Scotland call up, now is the perfect time particularly if they do come through and qualify for Qatar.ย  If he did move he would have to consider first team football to remain part of those plans.ย  ย Would he get that elsewhere – it is certainly what he has benefitted from here.
  3. We need to tie him into a longer contract – 12 months was fine in the summer, I would hope longer term plans have already been discussed.

Will Jamie leave in January?ย  For me the answer is no – he is highly thought of here and Russell Martin has got the best out of him, both player and manager will want that to continue.

Will he get a Scotland call up?ย  ย On current form there is no reason why not.
