Newport County benefitting from Bony experience

Wilfried Bony is using his Swansea City and Manchester City experience to assist Newport who are closing in on the play off positions once again in League Two.

Much of Newport’s progression is down to the scoring exploits of Dom Telford who has scored in seven successive league games and thirteen in the last twelve as he closes in on a club record goals at this level.

That record is just fifteen goals – achieved by Padraig Amond – but Telford is crediting the experience and knowledge of Bony for his scoring exploits.

Bony has been training at Rodney Parade for much of this year -still without a club since departing Al-Ittihad – but is sharing his knowledge with the squad and it is clear that Newport – and Telford in particular – are gaining from Bony being around them.

Telford explained “Wilfried Bony is training with us and I’m learning off him every day, the way he speaks and his mentality.

“That’s the main thing for meย  You can see every day, the way he talks and carries himself, he wants to be the best.ย  He’s got that elite mentality.ย  In the lower leagues sometimes you get quality players who don’t quite have that mentality.ย  That’s why they play in League Two not the Prem or the Championship.

“It’s clear to see the quality he’s got and the way he wants to help others.ย  He lives and breathes scoring goals and it’s music to my ears. I want to be learning off the best and he’s definitely one of the best.ย  I can’t put into words how much it helps day in day out.

“If you’re not quite on it in training, he’ll remind you that every day is important.ย  He’s been a massive help to me.”

Bony, who turns 33 this week, joined the Swans in 2013 and remained with us for two years before a transfer to Manchester City in 2015.ย  Things never really worked out for him at the Ethiad and a loan spell at Stoke followed before he returned to Swansea in 2017, eventually being released in 2019.06
