Portsmouth set to move for Liam Cullen

The future of Liam Cullen remains unclear at the moment with the Swans ready to listen to loan offers for the striker in this window although no firm decision has been taken as to whether he will be allowed to leave.

There is little doubt that the decision will be influenced by the club’s ability to bring in other striking options to the club with that ability being reduced yesterday with the news that one of our targets – Folarin Balogun – being set for a move to Middlesbrough.

Portsmouth are known to be watching the situation at Swansea regards Cullen and are set to make that interest more formal this week with them also linked with a move for another striker – Kyle Wootton of Notts County.

Speaking last month, Russell Martin confirmed that there had be no formal interest in Cullen but he admitted that he was probably expecting someย “It’s no surprise to me that Liam would be wanted by loads of clubs,” he said.

“We’ll just have to see on that one. No one has rung me about Liam. We haven’t made him available for a loan.”

Cullen’s chances of a loan move were also reduced when the Swans let Morgan Whittaker join Lincoln on loan earlier in the week and he is set to start for the Swans this weekend as we (hopefully) return to competitive action with the visit of Southampton in the FA Cup this Saturday.

Alongside Portsmouth there has been reported interest from Lincoln and MK Dons with the latter being an interesting link given the Swans desire to secure the likes of Andy Fisher and Matt O’Riley from Russell Martin’s former club.

Right now it is difficult to see the Swans letting Cullen go at this stage of the transfer window but it does feel increasingly unlikely he will be here come the end of the window and regular first team football is, just like Morgan Whittaker, exactly what he needs.
