Should we be telling Barnsley and Blackpool “no deal” for Fulton?

I don’t think there are very many Swansea City fans who did not believe that Jay Fulton’s Swansea City was over.ย  ย No league appearances since September and strong media links that he was going to make an almost immediate move to join up with former manager Steve Cooper in January.ย  ย But as we see him slowly returning to the fold should we be keeping hold of him?

Fulton was a late substitute in yesterday’s victory over Preston in the same way that he played 30 minutes in the FA Cup against Southampton.ย  ย Nothing spectacular in either performance but it would have given him a glimmer of hope that maybe there is a place for him in Russell Martin’s plans.

With the midweek capture of Hannes Wolf and the continued pursuit of James McAtee that place is unlikely to be anything more than fleeting appearances from the bench (the two names above to not factor in Grimes, Smith, Downes and Ntcham as parts of our midfield) but this remains a squad game and an experienced Championship midfielder should never be completely discarded surely?

Don’t get me wrong here, I have little doubt that if the right financial offer for the club and player came in for Fulton then he would be off.ย  Fleeting appearances here and there is not what he will want at this stage of his career and it is clear that Russell Martin wants better within his squad and that is the right thing for him as well.

Last weekend we heard that both Barnsley and Blackpool were interested in a move for Fulton but as the week evolved speculation was that the offers were not sufficient for the player.ย  Or at least not sufficient at the moment, there could of course be more offers to come either from these clubs or as yet unnamed ones.

The question right now I guess for Swans fans is what areas do we need strengthening in the most and do we feel that any deal for Fulton could happen in this window.ย  ย Asuming that we want to use any transfer fee for incomings, the later on that the deal happens the less time we have to get deals over the line with that money.ย  ย  Should it be a case of set ourselves a deadline and if Jay is still here by that date continue with him in the squad and worry about what we do next there in the summer?

It’s a tricky decision for Russell Martin over a player that he clearly does not fancy here in the long term but over a player that he has shown is not completely frozen out of the Swansea City picture.

  1. Probably on decent wages that we cant keep paying for the odd sub every couple of months .I wish him all the best as I think he is a great player and deserves more game time somewhere

  2. i can’t see he is any worse than Smith, for example, but there is no point in keeping him as an occasional sub if the manager doesn’t fancy him. Let him go to where he can continue his career.

  3. Had good season last season box to box player who will get and make goals Smith is poor last scored 4 years ago fulton and grimes middle of midfield works . Let’s play forward more, attack with pace, if Roberts or Dan James were still here Martin wouldn’t play them they wouldn’t fit into his system.
