Martin: “I feel a bit angry”

Russell Martin was left with mixed emotions after a frenetic game against Peterborough was decided by Joel Piroe’s late winner.

The same old frustrations were there for all to see as Swansea conceded twice to the bottom of the league Posh although they did show enough character to haul themselves back into the game and to take three points home to South Wales.

The frustration was most felt by the fans who have all too often this season seen poor defensive errors leading to goals conceded – a stark contrast from the strong defence that we had last term.

But for Martin, he remains proud of his team – which he says he has all been all season – although couldn’t hide his anger at some of the errors he’d seen on the pitch.

โ€œI donโ€™t know what I feel at the minute. I feel a bit angry,” he told the media post match.

“My overriding emotion โ€“ as itโ€™s been all season โ€“ is Iโ€™m proud of the players. Iโ€™m proud of what weโ€™re trying to do. Itโ€™s not easy. Iโ€™m proud they won the game. Not in the way Iโ€™d really like to do it but weโ€™ve found a way to win.

“I’m still trying to digest the first 15 minutes of the second-half which I’m really disappointed with. I can’t believe the game turned into that.

“It’s taken a brilliant finish from a guy we know can finish at the end.

“They had to change something, and we were nowhere near. That’s why we are where we are in the league. On our day we are capable of producing some incredible moments and some brilliant football, but the gap between when we’re really good and when we’re not is too big. You saw that in one game today. All of a sudden, the guys turn it back on because they have to.

“If they didn’t have so much courage and belief in what they’re doing, we don’t come back in that game. That period was strange, but the fact they have come back shows they’re willing to stick together and believe in what we’re doing. We deserved to win though, let’s get it right.”

In the next match, Swansea take on Birmingham City on Saturday at the Swansea.com Stadium.
