Rooney: I am proud of my Derby County players

Derby County’s future for next season looks all but assured as they arrive in SA1 tomorrow looking for the win that will keep alive the faint hopes that they have of avoiding a relegation that many thought was a certainty from the moment they were handed point deductions at the start of the season.

With six games to go the Rams find themselves in 23rd place in a table but now nine points adrift of a safety zone thanks to Reading’s win in midweek and a defeat against the inform Swans tomorrow would almost certainly end their hopes of an escape that never looked likely.

Derby would be 17th in the table if it was not for their 21-point deduction this season and the fact that they have even kept their hopes alive to this stage is testament to the way that Rooney has them playing.

They have been boosted this week by the news that US businessman Chris Kirchner has been selected as the preferred bidder to buy the club and that will give everyone involved additional optimism for next season which looks set to be at least one term in League One.

Rooney is positive for the future as he explained to RamsTV when asked about the purchase being approved โ€œI am delighted,” he told RamsTV.ย  “It’s obviously what I have been asking for for a long time and we are all really positive itโ€™s a step in the right direction

โ€œChris had a bid in December that wasnโ€™t accepted but he has clearly put another one in that has been accepted.ย  So it is now a case of putting the plans together that I had in place.ย  We finally have someone who wants to take over and invest in the club.”

Max Bird will be suspended for the Rams trip here but it is the only fresh absence for Rooney to deal with โ€œWe will prepare well, the team have trained well and we will go into the game aiming for the three points.ย  We have analysed Swansea and worked out how we want to play against them and will do all we can to ensure we get the win.

โ€œWe take comfort from being in the fight with six games to go.ย ย  Iโ€™m extremely proud of the player and how they have handled the situation and all the issues that we have faced even beyond the points deduction.

โ€œWe have six games left to keep trying our best and get as many points as we can.”
