Steve Cooper talked about the mentality of his side after watching all the good work in the win over Middlesbrough undone with a poor display at home to Luton this afternoon, a result that damaged the Swans play off hopes.
Cooper bemoaned the fact that this kind of thing has happened once too often this season but the most worrying factor of that statement is that we continue to do it and nothing seems to be changing. If the mentality is wrong then something should be done to correct that and that, unfortunately for Cooper, is something that has to come from him to make the change.
tโs a really disappointing day, weโve done it too many times this season where we have put ourselves in a good position and not capitalised. For me, it is a mentality thing – Steve Cooper
The Swans afternoon was summed up with a stupid red card for Jordan Garrick who will now serve a suspension as a result in a time when fitness and an in depth squad is desperately needed.
โI did not like our attitude towards the game once it started. I thought we were not efficient enough in terms of doing the basics,” added Cooper
โWe waited for the person next to us to get the job done rather than doing it ourselves. Itโs hard to shake that off if you start like that.”
This kind of thing though has been evident all season.ย All too often we have witnessed lethargic performances from the Swans where the tempo is just not there.ย It also seems to be more evident at the Liberty where we seem nervous and cautious and allow teams to grow in confidence against us as the game progresses.
These kind of things need to change when they are glaringly obvious and the post match comments bear as much familiarity as the disappointing performance itself.
โWe have only got ourselves to blame, thatโs for sure,โ added the Swans boss.
โItโs a poor result, a poor performance and I did not see it coming after last week and the build-up into the game.”
No doubt in the build up to Tuesday’s match against Millwall we will hear the same comments about us needing to learn from these mistakes and it’s great that we have the opportunity to put it right straight away.ย Groundhog day.
I would say judging by the Swans league position that Swansea are underperforming considering the players they have relative to the other teams in the rest of the league.
