The Swans are about to begin talks with Sunderland defender/midfielder Lynden Gooch who is out of contract this summer according to reports in the North East.
With Hannes Wolf and Cyrus Christie unlikely to return to the Swansea.com Stadium this summer there’s desperate need for full backs on either side of the defence.
Russell Martin has spoken openly about his desire to use a four man defence more this coming campaign which may open the door more to use Ryan Manning on the left and Kyle Naughton on the right but after that the cabinet is a little bare (especially with Ogbeta seemingly out of the picture).
Gooch could be the answer to one of those problems – a versatile American international who plays in central midfield for his country – as he can play anywhere across midfield or on the right side of defence and attack.
The 26 year old has seen it all since breaking through from the academy at Sunderland making his debut in the Premier League before consecutive relegations to League One. What could be his final game for the club was the play off final win at Wembley to take the club back to the Championship.
Chief sports writer for The Northern Echo reported earlier today that Sunderland were yet to reach agreement with the player and that “Goochโs versatility is understood to be of particular appeal to Swans boss Russell Martin, and the Welsh club are expected to offer more than the proposal that is currently on the table from the Black Cats.”
According to Wales Online Gooch is also understood to be particularly interested in playing for Russell Martin given the attractive style of play.
One to watch!
