Swans making transfer market moves

In a very truncated close season it was vital that sides went into the transfer window as active as they could be and that has certainly been the case for the Swans in recent days with two signings made and another bid confirmed today as having been made.

In a normal season we would have almost two months to do business to get players in before the season starts even if it would mean the late signings missing pre-season friendlies but this time around there was a little more than 5 weeks between the two seasons thanks to the three month lockdown of football between March and June.

It is less than three weeks at the moment since we were beaten at Brentford in the second leg of the play offs and – thanks to today’s League Cup draw – it could be less than two weeks until we go back into action although the league season remains still over three weeks away.

The Swans opened their transfer dealings on Friday with the signing of Korey Smith from Bristol City and he was joined on Sunday by the re-signing of Freddie Woodman for a second season-long loan.ย  And yesterday it was revealed that we had made a mid for Wigan’s Jamal Lowe who could be available within our budget thanks to the money problems at the relegated club.

Three players in so quickly is something to be commended for the Swans management and scouting team and it senses a determination to build on last season’s play off place next time around.ย  ย There was an expectation that Steven Benda could be given a chance in goal but with reported interest in him from elsewhere the right thing to do would be to secure a quality keeper for next season which is what Steve Cooper has done.

And whilst many of us cling to the hope that we could see Gallagher and Brewster back at the Liberty next season it is good to see strengthening in our midfield with Smith and possibly Lowe which will add further options for us going forward.

What further strengthening could happen remains open to debate and some of that will depend on any further departures from the Liberty notably Joe Rodon who is still rumoured to be on the wanted list of a few Premier league clubs.

But overall it has been a good start for the Swans during the close season and let’s hope that the second three weeks are as successful as the first.
