Martin: Players need to leave before further signings

Swans boss Russell Martin has again reiterated that more players will have to leave the club in order to make any further additions this summer.

Despite Flynn Downes and the likes of Korey Smith and Yan Dhanda leaving there is still a squad of 27 players at the club which Martin says needs trimming before adding any more.

And a number of those are very much out of favour like Ryan Bennett, Nathanael Ogbeta, Jay Fulton (although he has had plenty of minutes this pre season), Kyle Joseph and Jordon Garrick – all of which are available on either loan or permanent deals.

The Swans boss would desperately like to offload Bennett and Fulton with their wages amounting to a large part of the wage bill at the club although there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of interest for either.

In recent days Spurs midfielder Harvey White has been linked with a move to the club whilst Troy Parrott has yet to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium amid suggestions the club are courting him should Joel Piroe depart this summer.

A right back is also required with Joel Latibeaudiere filling in for the majority of pre season instead of his more familiar centre half role.

Following Swansea’s 2-1 win at League One Charlton Athletic yesterday, Martin said: “Being honest, I don’t think so at the moment (on whether arrivals were likely before the season opener at Rotherham).

“We have a huge squad. We have 27 players training at the moment. We need one or two players in certain positions, I think it’s really obvious, but I think we’ll have to wait financially for people to exit the building first.

“It’s not as simple as Flynn [Downes] going. We’ve been really supported so far with Matty [Sorinola], Harry [Darling], Nathan [Wood] and Joe [Allen]. It’s never quite as simple as Flynn going and someone coming in.

“We’re at a place where there are a lot of players at the club and a lot of players we need to really assess if they’re going to help us week in, week out or if they’re better off playing elsewhere, whether that’s permanent or on loan.”

Goals from Joel Piroe and Ryan Manning saw the team come back from a horror own goal by Harry Darling in the final pre season fixture before the big kick off next Saturday.
