Martin – Still no incomings until player sale

Another day at the Swansea.com Stadium and yet more disappointment as the Swans lost 2-0 to Luton and Russell Martin did little to encourage in his post match press conference.

It wasn’t just the result that frustrated the 16,000 fans in attendance, it was the performance and the lack of energy from a team which looks devoid of ideas, confidence and – worryingly – fitness after just five League fixtures.

Whilst Martin clearly needs to take a considerable amount of flak for the poor start to the campaign (along with a run of one win in ten at home) there’s no doubt that the squad is painfully thin in some crucial areas.

But despite Joel Latibeaudiere’s injury this week nothing is imminent in terms of incomings with further outgoings required to fund any signings before the September deadline.

Martin spoke post match: “We’re [with the owners] in constant conversation.

“The group is what we have at the minute. I’m sure people will be frustrated by that. You can either take your frustration out on the team or really stick behind the young men.

“If you look at what Hannes [Wolf] and Cyrus [Christie] added to us in January, it was really big. Joe [Allen] is going to be an outstanding player for us, you saw that again today.

“He’s not played for three months. He was never meant to play 90 minutes today. We probably don’t have as much depth as everyone else.”

It’s all a bit depressing although questions still need raising as to who thought it appropriate to recruit two new centre halves when wing backs and another midfielder were so painfully required.

On whether the club has to sell before further additions, Martin said: “Yeah, I wouldn’t be sitting here and telling you if it wasn’t,”

On the question of a loan signing arriving, he said: “Not at the moment, no.”
