The Swans produced a rousing 45 minutes after the horror show of the first half to salvage a point and came so close to snatching all three as they fought back from two goals down. And that is what sticks in the mind of the manager who is on the verge of leading the Swans into the second flight for the first time since 1984.
In addition to that he knows he has a club record points tally in his sights as well although he refuses again to put any target on top of that. Martinez was speaking as he welcomed two first cap Welsh internationals into his squad – Owain Tudur Jones was joined in Swansea by Ashley Williams who signed on loan from Stockport and should complete a permanent move in the summer.
And whilst he was happy to have his squad back together, his mind immediately focused on the weekend fixture as he sent his side in search of a 13th away success of the season. “We just need to enjoy every game as it comes now.
“We are in a fantastic position with a good points tally and we are excited about it,” said Martinez.
“The fans may look for a target, but, for us, it would be wrong.
“We are six points away from our all-time club record (85) and that is great.
“We are going to have to be at our best, we are going to have to be adaptable and then in May we can look back and see what we have achieved.
“Against Bristol Rovers in the second half that is our standard, that is what we have to try to replicate in our next seven games.
“The hardest thing is to keep playing the way we have been playing. If, during the next seven games, we do not reach our standard then I will be very disappointed.”
Swansea's task could be made easier in the next week with Doncaster facing tough looking home fixtures against Nottingham Forest (tonight) and Leeds United (Tuesday) – both of which they must have pencilled in as must win games if they want to deny us the top two place we deserve.
