FAW Cup – Barry 3 Swans 2

Another marvellous night’s football saw the 1998/99 winners, Barry Town overcame their Nationwide League opponents, Swansea City at Jenner Park, while at Farrar Road the visitors, Aberystwyth triumphed over Bangor City. Barry took a first half lead through Jamie Moralee after 19 mins when, after ‘keeper Jason Jones had cleared poorly, he reacted first when Lloyd disposed Todd to force home from close range.

The visitors had plenty of possession but rarely threatened, despite the efforts of Martin Thomas who was always prompting and probing.

John Hollins read “the riot act” at half time and it was different Swansea who appeared for the second 45 mins. Bari Morgan headed home after 67 mins, when he was unopposed to glance home Keegan’s corner off his shoulder.

The equaliser only lasted four minutes as Moralee scored again, when Andrew York, up from the back flicked on Jenkins’ long throw, which Moralee appeared to force home again from close range although the television replays don’t confirm his touch. There was a suspicion of handball as the Swansea players protested to the referee.

It was no surprise as substitute Mutton equalised again after 80 mins when he headed home from five yards and the visitors looked the more likely winners but in stoppage time a howler from Jason Jones presented Barry with the winner. What seemed an aimless ball over the top was cleared direct by keeper Jones to Terry Evans some 35 yards out and he calmly fired home to give the Dragons their third win in five games over the Swans.
