Luckily I had my Student Union card so it cost £12 but I still wasn’t sure if I had enough to get back across the Severn Bridge! I’m personally going to speak to the FA about that, the same price as some Premiership clubs entry fee!
The game started well with 15 mins of pressure from the Swans giving Wycombe’s keeper Taylor a few wicked crosses to deal with, but alas as always we fell behind in the 17th minute with Wycombe’s first serious attack of the match.
After Steve Jones had given Wycombe’s star midfielder Chris Vinnicombe too much space down the right, his cross to Thompson was headed wide of goal, but Wycombe’s striker “Rambo” Rammell was about 2 yds offside guided the ball into the net.
The complaints of Bound and Smith fell on deaf ears and the Swan’s confidence was obviously knocked by such a low blow when enjoying a good period of pressure. This lead to the second goal 5 mins later. After some poor attempts at clearances the ball fell to Carroll who’s cross from just inside the area was missed by all and sundry at the front post, leaving Rammell free on the back post with an easy tap in past Freestone. Wycombe’s 2 goal lead was felt enough by the home side to sit back and absorb the pressure but as the Swans confidence was rock bottom they threw few balls forward for Savarese to try to latch onto.
The rest of the first half passed without incident except for a penalty denied to Wycombe by the linesman obviously trying to make up for the error he made earlier in the game, and Psycho getting what looked to be a bad knock on the shin and looks doubtful for Walsall on Boxing day. The half time entertainment came from a penalty shoot out between 2 local sides one under 7 and the other under 8’s with the doggiest keeper ever seen in the world, more dodgy than that Tunisian keeper nuting a sharp implement to try and postpone the match this week!
The second half was almost all Swansea but our midfield lacked any distribution skills full stop, as our best passages of play were when Bound and Smith lobbed it over the top of them straight to Watkin (who replaced Psycho) who distributed the ball well between himself and Savarese. Romo was having a nightmare again, and Stu Roberts was brought on to replace him as a wide forward, this almost had an instantaneous result.
After a great header by Watkin sent the ball to Stu who passed back to Steve Jones. Jones put a cracking ball to Casey who had a gilt edged chance to equalise but his tame shot was going wide, but a sliding Savarese managed to just reach the ball only to push it wide of the empty net. Then the Swans got the goal they deserved.
A deep ball from Bound was lightly glanced forward by Savarese onto the forward run of Stu who had broken free of the defence, and coolly slotted home his second of the season.
Wycombe brought on another defender for the final 12 mins and with 6 men behind the ball we struggled to break them down. In reflection we were unlucky to lose but given what’s happened in the past 2 months it was highly likely to happen after going behind to such an injustice.
But the signs are positive for Boxing Day that we’ll get that 1st win in 12. Lets’ hope Walsall come down a bit weary after too many Chrimbo spirits!
