The development which will include a retail park, restaurants, hotel, bowling alley and a cinema multiplex is expected to bring hundreds of new jobs to the city, and will, according to a recent economic report by the Centre of Economic & Business Research, increase Swansea’s prospects significantly.

Today’s council decision, indicating the council’s willingness to approve the planning application means that the long awaited Morfa Stadium is more of a reality, subject to approval by the National Assembly, which is expected before the end of February.

n the Official site Swans chairman Neil McClure said tonight: “The backing by Swansea Council is a crucial step forward towards the Morfa Stadium project becoming a reality. True, it has taken a long time to get to this stage, taking over three years so far, but the enormous benefit to sport in Swansea, and to the prosperity of the City of Swansea will be enormous when the Stadium is completed.

Having the Swans and the Whites playing at a brand new purpose built stadium will be a triumph for the city, and is an objective we have worked long and hard to achieve. As a partnership, with the Council, we have now created a working platform from which the stadium can be built, where rugby and soccer can flourish in magnificent facilities, and the whole region can reap the economic and sporting benefits therein.”

Swansea RFC Director, Rob Davies, who in conjunction with fellow Liberty Properties plc Director Mike James announced a ร‚ยฃ1.2million injection into the rugby club last year said: “The council’s decision this morning means that the time when the All Whites and the Swans will be playing at their new home, Morfa, is drawing ever closer. From the outset, our goal has been to see Swansea gain in every way.

For rugby, our aim has been to see the All Whites playing at a stadium that mirrors the ambitions and success of the club. For sport in general, our aim has been to see Swansea get the sort of facilities that will make it a city of true sporting excellence in every sense.

And for Swansea as a whole, our aim has been to see a city that gains from sports facilities and development that will enable increased economic success of the city, with a stadium that raises the perception of Swansea to the rest of the world.”

The new Morfa Stadium is expected to be completed in time for September 2002, in time for the start of the 2002 football and rugby seasons.
