It’s been a harrowing week for football again. The stadium disaster in South Africa bought back painful memories of Hillsborough in 1989 and the irony was it was almost on the 12th anniversary. To see so many people go to attend a match of football and never return is distressting enough, fans of our football club appreciate that too (Terry Coles, RIP) but to see a football pitch with bodies strewn across it brings a tear to the most hardened eye. Slightly off this subject as well, how sad it was to see that some fans found it impossible to keep silent for the one minute in the Merseyside derby yesterday. Surely if two sets of fans were going to understand the reasons it would be the two from the city most affected by that tragic day in April 1989? Still, you can’t account for the handing out of brains can you? As if seeing fans dying at a game wasn’t bad enough, events at Roots Hall yesterday bought a new meaning to the statement ‘It is only a game’ A young referee, Mike North, a father of two young daughters, collapsed and died from a heart attack on the pitch. Two young daughters left without a father without warning all because he wanted to play some part in the beautiful game. It’s tragic to see this happen and, again memories of Robbie James cannot help but surface when you think of what happened. Football is simply only a game. If you win, lose or draw, there will always be another game and there is a very high chance that you will be around to see it. Relegation is painful for any supporter but it will be nothing to the pain felt by the families that will not see their loved ones again. It really puts it all into perspective when you think what has happened in the last seven days. Our football club is in far from an ideal situation but I’d rather see third division football next season then experience the loss of a loved one. Kind of puts it all in perspective really, doesn’t it? |
