New Chairman makes decision on Martin

Andy Coleman has told Russell Martin that the ownership group want him to commit to a new contract at Swansea City as the Championship season comes to a close.

That’s according to Wales Online journalist Phil Blanche on Twitter this afternoon.

A fantastic run of form saw the Swans just three points short of the top six following the exciting 3-2 win against West Brom this afternoon – an improvement of five points compared to last season.

And with Martin closing in on the final twelve months of his three year contract there has been much speculation in recent days that Leicester City are monitoring the situation should the worst happen and they get relegated from the Premier League.

The interesting matter will be whether Coleman’s desire to secure Martin to a new deal will be matched by the manager. All snippets have suggested he will but one would suspect it would depend on a number of factors.

The support offered this summer in transfer window spending will be a key discussion point as will the expectations for the forthcoming campaign – which will surely be a more serious push for promotion?

It’s sure to be an interesting summer.

  1. commit to a new contract? They need to offer him one first. And that’s not really the words Coleman used, now, is it?
Come on Rob, dont twist the words for clicks like others.

    • I think it’s a fair reflection of Phil Blanche’s words in the Tweet. Would you agree Harry?

No need to twist words for clicks, the stats speak for themselves.

  2. Whatever your opinion of Russell Martin and it has been a mixed season , the last nine games have changed things .Seven wins and two draws in nine games is a remarkable run .Despite some of the traits that most fans hate like the over- passing inthe back that caused the first goal yesterday there is much to admire .There has been much to admire with some individuals like Wood ,Cundle and Ntcham playing better than we ever thought possible.
With all the contractual issues we have the first step in stabilising the club must be to to show faith in Martin and extend his contract. That doesnโ€™t mean Piroe ,Manning and others will be rushing to sign new contracts ,it doesnโ€™t mean the Americans will offer them new contracts but at least itโ€™s a start.

  3. Although I am still a bit worried about Martins tacticle sense I do think he is a great man manager. His failings sometimes will I think improve with more experience. I think it would be a massive mistake in not offering him a new contract. It would mean losing the progress that has been made. Under a new manager we would start back at square 1.

  4. If Swansea let this guy go it will be their biggest mistake. Honest sincere are just a few of the good words to describe him. I am an ex rugby player from Llanelli but have followed Swansea since my school day, on the north bank singing tip toe through the tulips and many more songs that we had. Im obviously in my later years now but unlike some, wish all Welsh sides well.
