Michael ReevesIt is difficult to know what happens next for Morgan Whittaker with reports surfacing yesterday that Rangers have cooled their interest in the player which could mean a move North of the border is off the cards.
Whittaker was a target for the Scottish Giants in the January window but the Swans held firm on the price they wanted for the striker and he remained at Swansea for the remainder of the season.
It didn’t mean lots of first team action for Morgan though with Russell Martin clearly seeing him as a bit part player in his squad despite the excellent form of Whittaker in the first half of the season when on loan at Plymouth.
Interest in taking Whittaker to Home Park does remain although reports have suggested that the Swans required fee for the player may mean that they have to move onto other targets.
Ever since the close of the season there have been reports that Rangers were ready to move for the player again but with these fresh reports that is now thrown into doubt which leaves Morgan in a state of limbo with the new season just four weeks away from starting.
Wales Online reported this week that Whittaker would be “open” to a Rangers move but the Daily Record says that Rangers boss Michael Beale has cooled following some new arrivals already at Ibrox during the summer window.
Nobody really knows what Michael Duff’s view is on Whittaker although again paper reports have suggested that his chances here again could still be limited during the new season. Given the widely held belief that Joel Piroe will be sold in the summer, if Whittaker is not seen as a viable alternative to him then a sale is just as inevitable.
So that starts to bring the question as to where he may go. I am not sure I subscribe to the belief that Plymouth could not afford his transfer fee but I would also imagine that there will be some wider competition for his signature. It is known that other Championship sides were following his progress last season but as yet none have shown their hand in any move for Whittaker.
We should also not totally dismiss the initial reports on Duff’s view. The new manager has been in place only two weeks and whilst there is no doubt that he will have arrived with a view, that view will be formed more widely based on what he sees on a daily basis.
However, whatever way you are currently looking at this the future for Morgan Whittaker is not clear and that will be something that he – and his representatives – over the coming weeks will need to become clearer or they face the extended pause in his career that effectively has been the last six months.
And that has no benefit to any party.
We know Whittaker has some talent – how good he is remains to be seen .The one thing that we know is that he was used as a pawn in a strange game last season .Brought back from the best team in league one where he was one of their star players to a mid- table championship team where the manager didn’t seem to rate him .
He surely deserves better
Duff likes playing 2 up front, with 1 supporting. Ideal for Whittaker, who was good at assists 7, plus scored 9 goals with Whittaker.
Just play him as the 2 nd striker or @ No10
Being an Argyle supporter for many years,I and the rest of the supporters,know alot more than anybody about the going’s on of Morgan.
First he is not owned by SWANSEA,but by two agents.Our manager Steve Schumacher moulded him into a great player,like the rest of the team.
He stated when it got out that Morgan was returning to Swansea,he understood that Morgan was on a season loan,but then it became clear,that it was the agents who owned him wanted him back.
And that has been the problem,these agents wanted to sell him,to make a quick buck.But the club’s who wanted him, could not play him that season,except Rangers.
