“I want a Ferrari” – Duff warning for Southampton over Wood

Michael Duff made it clear after watching his Swans side beaten at Preston that Southampton’s valuation of Nathan Wood falls short of the club’s own valuation and that the second bid submitted yesterday was just a re-hash of the first one

Wood has been the subject of two bids from Southampton and former manager Russell Martin this week but both have been rejected by the Swans and, as Duff said “he is our player”.

That much became clear this afternoon when Wood retained his place in the side although he was unable to stop the Swans losing their second successive match on the road and ended the game with no win in our opening four league games of the season.

Whether Southampton come back in with improved bids remains to be seen but for now it is clear that the Swans see him as part of their plans and it is clear that Duff would like to keep hold of the central defender.

Speaking after the 2-1 defeat at Preston, the Swans boss said “He is a good player, that’s why people want him.

“He’s our player and he has two years left on his contract. The total value of the second bid, I don’t think was any different from the first one. The sell-ons and things just got juggled around.

“I want a Ferrari for Christmas… He has signed his contract, he’s our player and I thought he was good today.

“He is wanted by a club, the manager was previously here and he obviously knows him really well.

“But we have got a valuation on him. The club who have put the bid in have just received a lot of money and the value we think compared to the value of players being sold who are at his level – it’s short of the mark.”

The reported value of the deals has been suggested to be £10m and it has been speculated in the media that the Swans are keen to see a fee nearer the £12m that they reportedly got for Joel Piroe.

Watch this space on this one, it doesn’t feel like the potential closed matter that the press have suggested it to be.
