It’s Captain Cusack

Swansea City captain Nick Cusack was today appointed as Chairman of the Professional Footballers Association, replacing former Wales captain Barry Horne in the job. Our congratulations go to Nick on his appointment.

Swansea fans have seen a different side to Cusack over the past few weeks in his dealings with the media and also the club after Black Wednesday seven weeks ago. Cusack seemed to be the rock at the centre of all the activity at the Vetch and he certainly stepped up quite a few places in people’s esteem following his actions.

Cusack told the official site ” Obviously I’m delighted. To hold such a position is really an honour, and being voted on by fellow players makes it even better, as it shows that they appreciate my efforts.

” It’s a goodtime to take over though, now that the TV money deal has been sorted…it will certainly be a bit quieter!”

In his new role, Cusack will be able to utilise his politics degree, and his various post-graduate qualifications in both economics and management: “Basically, I’ll be heading the Management Committee, which has the power to decide the association’s policies in everything from the TV money deal, which I was involved in, to education and training.ย  I’ll be working very closely with Gordon Taylor, and his officers, for the benefit of everyone involved with the game.”

” I feel that I can combine my duties as Chairman, with those as a player, and of captain at Swansea City. I certainly won’t be neglecting the Club, far from it. It is in the constitution that to be Chairman, or to serve on the Management Committee, you have to hold a playing contract.

” That is why Barry Horne has had to step down so if anything, it’s going to drive me on to earn a new deal when my current contract expires next summer!”

Nick hopes that this will be just the start of a long term involvement, which will continue, even when his playing days come to an end: ” Football administration is what I have always looked at for a future career. I’m 36 next month, so I have to be realistic and say that I am approaching the end of my playing career, even if I do earn a new contract.

” Now, I’ve got a fantastic opportunity to work closely with Gordon, in a key role, and who knows where it will lead to in the long term?”

I am sure that all Swansea fans wish Nick all the best in his appointment.
