Cundle ready for Swans reunion with Plymouth Argyle

There were many fingers pointed at Russell Martin for his record in the loan market but it is safe to say that the loan of Luke Cundle last season from Wolves was one that safely sat in the successful column.

The midfielder made 32 league appearances last season, 21 of them in the starting line up as he scored three goals for the Swans who pushed close to the play offs at the end of the season.

It led to many calling for a return this season but a change in management coupled with a change in style meant that he would play elsewhere this season and his destination ended up as tomorrow’s opponents in Plymouth Argyle.

Cundle already has three goals for Argyle this season – the same as he managed for the Swans – suggests that this will be every much the same success as it was last time around.

The Swans and Plymouth are separated by just one point and one place ahead of tomorrow’s game with the Devon club’s return to the Championship being their first stint here since their relegation in 2010.

Cundle is looking forward to seeing some of his old team mates and looked back fondly on his time at Swansea

“I enjoyed it,” he told Plymouth Live.ย  “I learned a lot in terms of playing in the first team environment and things like that. It was definitely a good learning curve for me and my first loan so, yeah, all good.

“When you are coming up against a former team I think it does give you that little extra bit of motivation just naturally. I will do my best if I play to try to score, or something like that.

“There is still a lot of lads there I know, I still speak to a few of them, but the manager has changed so a lot has gone on there. It will be a completely different team to what it was last year. We are looking forward to a good and tough game.

“I think when you have a new manager in it takes time to get his philosophy and ideas across to the players. They have won the last three so they are going to be in good spirit and will have confidence for the game.

“I have scored a few goals and I’m looking to continue that because that’s what I feel as if I didn’t do as well as I wanted to last season out on loan.

“I’m definitely looking to add goals and more assists to my game, and just every time I get on the pitch try to make an impact, and help the team perform well, and get as much points as possible.”

The Swans will of course come up against another former player tomorrow in Morgan Whittaker who joined Argyle on a permanent move in the summer after a successful loan spell last season.ย  The forward has made more league starts and scored more league goals in the short time since his permanent move than he did in his career at Swansea showing just how he never really fit in here in SA1 following his move from Derby.

“Different managers have different styles and the way they play. It wasn’t meant to be for him at Swansea but he has found a new home here. He enjoys it and fits in perfectly.”
