Matt Grimes knows a thing or two about Swansea City dressing rooms. With almost nine years behind him as a Swansea City player the skipper has made more than 250 appearances for the club and has pretty much been the first name on the teamsheet for the past five seasons at the club.
A new contract was signed by Grimes back in the summer saw him add two more years to the deal he already had in place and takes his contracted time at the club through to 2027. At the age of twenty-eight many would argue that Grimes is currently at the prime of his career and he has been pivotal to the Swans squad for a long time now not just as the lynchpin of our midfield but also as the club captain.
Russell Martin persuaded him to stay at Swansea when he first arrived and Michael Duff was here when he signed the contract extension which tells you much about how Grimes is seen by the management of the club and he told a fan’s forum at the Swansea.com Stadium yesterday evening that signing the new deal was one of the easiest decisions he has had to make.
“There was a lot of noise in the summer,” said the Swans captain. “But signing the new contract was an easy decision. I have spent nine years here and I owe almost everything in my career to this club.
“I saw what we’re trying to build here, and I want to be part of it and bring success to this club. I love the club, my family love it and love being here and I just want success for everyone here.
“It was a no-brainer to sign a new contract. The spirit and togetherness is second to none, it’s the best dressing room I have been in. We enjoy spending time with each other, we enjoy being in early to have breakfast and work in the gym.
“We enjoy doing what we do as a squad, that is massive for any success of any team, then you add in a good run and it gives you that bit extra. But, when you have tough runs, that’s when you see the real character of a squad, and I think you have seen exactly what we are about.
“The support, home and away, is massive for us. We have to thank people for their support, we appreciate it so much. “We played over a year without supporters in the ground during Covid and it just underlined that supporters are everything at football matches.”
