The quietest transfer window yet?

One of the things that has struck about the current transfer window is not the lack of action seen from inside the club – that just isn’t a surprise any more – but it is the lack of speculation linking us with a host of players that has usually struck by the middle of January.

Even when you cast your mind back twelve months to January 2023 and a transfer window that saw us sign nobody there was a host of speculation floating around and seeming interest in many players.   None of which of course came up to fruition.

It was said early in the reign of Andy Coleman that he was keen to plug the leaks from the club but even if he has been successful in that front (which he never will be) it does not explain the lack of speculation as more often than not transfer links come from those outside of the club not those inside.

Agents, representatives, selling clubs and even players themselves like to test waters about moves with some well placed transfer links taking place but this window it has been pretty much quiet with a lack of meaningful links.

I guess there is a worry that even those players we are being linked with are lower league players some of whom make a step up more than easily (Josh Key is a clear example) but often scoring goals or making an impression at League Two or lower is no reflection of success when you take a couple of steps upward.

Chairman Andy Coleman tells us that “We have spent hours upon hours preparing for this window. The work has been in place for quite a few months now,

“I think there is always a need to strengthen any squad, regardless of where you are – any position in any table.”

Luke Williams is also of the belief that there will be additions in this window “People are working so hard. We are getting lots of information on lots of different players.

“Imagine we are trying to furiously put a jigsaw puzzle together, with so many people picking up different pieces at the same time.

“The thing I see is a frenzy of activity, so many people wanting to make a big contribution, so I am really excited about that.

“I am really pleased we have that much expertise and that much energy to try to strengthen us.”

In fairness to the club the January window is always a strange one anyway.   And this season for us potentially a completely different view with a side that is not really under the treat of relegation and certainly isn’t consistent enough to even think about promotion.   With a new manager in situ there is more than a strong argument to retain a budget for the summer where transfer business can tend to be more shrewd and less panicked.   That would give Luke Williams a few months to work with the squad himself and see where he believes the biggest holes are rather than react to plans that were made before he was even a thought to be the Swansea manager.

With a little over two weeks left of the window though you can expect the speculation to rise a little and more players to be linked – whether they turn into signings for the Swans remain to be seen and as Coleman has told us before we need to judge him on his actions…
