Home >Story Index> Is Flynn Really In The Running? |
There can be no denying that Brian has applied for the vacant job at the Vetch although I understand that so too have Neville Southall, Don Mackay and Jimmy Mullen but are any of them at the front of the queue to replace the bitter Colin Addison and Peter Nicholas? |
Well, we think possibly not. Our sources tell us that the management committee in charge at the Vetch are favouring the permanent appointment of Nick Cusack and Roger Freestone as a player-management duo at the moment and all this pairing have to do is to prove themselves over the remaining few games of this season. |
Nick and Roger stepped in after the surprise departure of Addison and Nicholas a few weeks back and have achieved one win, one draw and one defeat in their three games in charge. The management committee seem to believe that with the support of the players and large sections of the crowd Nick and Roger may well be the people to take the club into the 2002/2003 season. |
Of course, Brian Flynn’s appearance at the Vetch tomorrow is bound to fuel speculation that he will be taking over in the summer but he will be there regardless as part of the BBC summarising team for the match with Barry Town. |
There is, of course, the chance that Flynn will be invited to join the club in a director of football type role but we believe that there is a more than even chance that the job will go on a permanent basis to the current caretakers. Nick Cusack is believed in some quarters to be a doubt because of his PFA commitments but we understand that he will take on the job on a permanent basis if it is offered to him. From my own personal dealings with Roger I know that he would also be keen to take a permanent position within the management structure as well. |
The case of both Nick and Roger is undoubtedly strengthened by the players being fully supportive of the management duo. As captain, Kristian O’Leary put it “I think since Roger and Nick took over we have played pretty well. We even did all right at Carlisle but gave away some sloppy goals. All the players are 100 per cent behind Rog and Nick because we have got so much respect for them. We’re all enjoying it at the moment. There’s a smile on everyone’s face at training.” |
City bookmakers have opened a book at who they think will take over once a decision is made with Cusack and Flynn immediately made joint favourites at 6-4. Also listed in the odds are Roger Freestone and Kevin Ratcliffe at 5-2, John Hollins at 6-1 woth former Vetch boss John Toshack at 10-1. |
Whether the two caretakers get the chance to prove themselves on a more permanent basis remains to be seen but at the moment they are the men that are in control and they are the ones that have got to be dislodged. |
