Saturday’s hammering at Wrexham saw the Swans slip into the Division 3 relegation places and has set alarm bells ringing amongst Swansea fans everywhere, many of whom believe that a change of manager is the way to stop the rot. The Sunday papers have added fuel to the fire by speculating wildly about who should replace Nick Cusack. The names of Brian Flynn, Dean Saunders, Leighton James and even Colin Addison and Peter Nicholas have once again been mentioned.

So, do we really need a change at this early stage of the season? We all know that Cusack’s managerial record so far has been far from satisfactory, with only two wins since he took charge at the end of last season. Granted, the squad he inherited last season were not up to the job, but surely it’s becoming apparent that a lot of his new signings are not much of an improvement on what we saw last season. The board of directors have obviously given Nick their full backing in allowing him to bring in the players that he wanted and also allowing him to appoint his own assistant in Alan Curtis. But how much longer can these disastrous results continue before a change has to be made.

Don’t get me wrong, Nick Cusack and Alan Curtis are nice guys, but maybe that’s the problem!!! Since the start of the season Nick Cusack has admitted that we have severe defensive problems and has told us that he’ll put them right. But as the club lurches from one defeat to another, the harsh reality is that the players are not responding to Nick and Alan’s management and maybe this is due to the fact that they are “nice” guys. It’s a sad fact that today’s professional footballers seem to respond better to “hard” managers rather than the nice guys (just look at Alex Ferguson as an example)

In my opinion I think it’s time we brought someone in to give Nick Cusack a helping hand. A hard task-master, someone who will really knock this squad into shape. Bringing in a no-nonsense character, perhaps as Director of Football could well be the turning point in our season. Nick Cusack will one day make a very good football manager, but right now I think he needs somebody with a lot of managerial experience to help him turn things around.

I know a lot of people think that it’s far to early in the season to be thinking about a change like this but mid- September will turn into mid-April very, very soon and by then it will be far to late.

At times like these I think it’s very easy to let your personal opinions of a manager cloud your judgement of what is good for the club. We all know what Nick did for this club during the Petty saga (and we are eternally grateful) but it’s time to put sentimentality aside and put Swansea City Football Club first, and if that means bringing in an experienced man to sort out our problems, then that’s what we have to do.
