Swansea City fans, breathe easy, or perhaps, brace yourselves! News just breaking this Saturday, July 27, 2025, from none other than Alan Nixon, suggests that our beloved Swans are now leading the charge to bring Oli McBurnie back to SA1. Yes, you read that right – Oli McBurnie.
According to Nixon’s latest dispatch, we’ve leapfrogged Hull City and Ipswich Town in the pursuit of the former Sheffield United and Swans striker. Hull’s financial woes, apparently, are a significant stumbling block, with their ability to offer the kind of contract McBurnie is reportedly discussing with us – a three-year deal – being compromised. Ipswich, meanwhile, are still lurking, ready to complicate matters.
Now, a dose of reality. It’s Alan Nixon, isn’t it? While he certainly breaks a lot of stories, his track record isn’t exactly infallible. Many a time have we been sent into a frenzy by a Nixon exclusive, only for it to fall flat. So, while this news is certainly exciting, a healthy dose of scepticism is probably warranted. We’ve seen this play out before, and sometimes, it feels like a bit of a transfer merry-go-round orchestrated purely to generate clicks.
This leads to the question many of us have been asking: Weren’t we supposedly out of this race? Whispers from other sources had painted a picture of McBurnie having more lucrative offers on the table, with some suggesting he was keen to stay in Spain, perhaps even tempted by Europa League football with Celta Vigo, who were also linked. It seemed like the financial disparity would price us out, or that a return to England wasn’t his priority. So, why the sudden turnaround? Is it a genuine shift in his preference, or have the financial situations of other clubs simply deteriorated to our advantage? Could it be that his recent activity on social media, even liking posts about him in the new Swans kit, was more than just a tease?
Regardless of how we got here, if this report holds true, a McBurnie return could genuinely be a good thing for Swansea City. As a free agent after Las Palmas’ relegation, he wouldn’t cost us a transfer fee, which is always attractive. He’s matured since his last stint with us, having spent a season in La Liga where he contributed five goals and six assists in 35 appearances for a struggling side. He then returned to Sheffield United and scored 13 goals in their 2022-23 Championship promotion season, demonstrating he still has what it takes at this level.
More than statistics, though, it’s the homecoming narrative. McBurnie knows the club, he knows South Wales, and he’s still held in high regard by many here. A settled, more experienced Oli McBurnie, leading our line, could provide the physical presence, link-up play, and crucially, goals, that we desperately need to push for a top-six finish under Alan Sheehan. Let’s just hope Nixon’s crystal ball is accurate this time.
