Reports are circulating that Swansea City are among a clutch of clubs keen on securing the services of highly-rated Liverpool youngster, Luca Stephenson. The 21-year-old midfielder has garnered significant attention following an impressive loan spell at Dundee United and a strong pre-season with his parent club. As Swansea continue to build their squad under Alan Sheehan, the potential arrival of Stephenson could be a shrewd move for the Welsh club.

Stephenson’s career to date has been one of steady progression. Starting his journey in Sunderland’s academy, he joined Liverpool in 2018. He quickly rose through the ranks at Anfield, captaining both the U18 and U21 sides. While he is yet to make a senior appearance for Liverpool, his development has largely come through successful loan spells. In the 2023-24 season, he featured 30 times for Barrow in League Two, contributing to one of their best league finishes in over a century. This past season, 2024-25, saw him make a significant step up to the Scottish Premiership with Dundee United, where he truly made his mark. Playing 31 league games and scoring three goals, Stephenson was named Dundee United’s Young Player of the Season.

What could Luca Stephenson bring to the Swansea City squad? Primarily a central midfielder, Stephenson’s versatility is a key asset. He has shown he can operate effectively in defensive midfield, and has even played at right-back and centre-back during Liverpool’s pre-season. This adaptability would be incredibly valuable to Alan Sheehan, especially given Swansea’s current squad situation. Recent reports indicate a “real issue with midfield balance” at Swansea, with concerns raised about the consistency of existing options and the reliance on youth. While players like Gonçalo Franco, Melker Widell, and Ethan Galbraith show promise, the team seems to lack a consistent, cohesive midfield unit. Stephenson, described as having “technical quality, tactical maturity, and a hunger to play regular senior football,” could provide the stability and drive needed in the middle of the park. His ability to contribute defensively, as evidenced by his tackle and interception stats from his time at Dundee United, alongside his passing range, would offer a well-rounded option.

Furthermore, his experience of playing regular first-team football in both League Two and the Scottish Premiership at a young age suggests he is ready for the demands of the Championship. Being named Young Player of the Season in Scotland is a testament to his impact and potential. For Swansea, a club that has often looked to develop young talent, Stephenson fits the mould perfectly.

The likelihood of this transfer going ahead appears to be moderate, with several factors at play. Swansea City are certainly keen, with reports indicating they are among the clubs to have “monitored” the player. However, they face competition. League One sides Cardiff City, Reading and Rotherham United, are also said to be interested in loan deals although Liverpool are keen not to see him drop so low. Maybe more significantly, Aberdeen are reportedly considering a permanent move for Stephenson, mirroring their successful signing of Leighton Clarkson from Liverpool previously.

Liverpool’s stance on Stephenson’s future is crucial. He has been a “favourite” of new head coach Arne Slot during pre-season, featuring regularly and impressing the coaching staff with his work ethic and composure. While he is admired within the first-team setup, the fiercely competitive nature of Liverpool’s midfield, coupled with new high-level additions, suggests that regular minutes at Anfield will be hard to come by. With his contract set to expire in 2026, Liverpool will likely seek to extend his deal before sanctioning another loan, as was reported to be the most likely eventuality last month. A permanent move is also a possibility, particularly if Aberdeen firm up their interest, and for Stephenson, gaining stability at a club where he can consistently play first-team football will be a priority.

Swansea’s ability to offer a prominent role in a Championship side, coupled with their reputation for developing young players, could make them an attractive destination for Stephenson. The current need for midfield reinforcement at the club also puts them in a strong position to offer him significant game time. While there’s competition, and Liverpool’s ultimate decision on a loan or permanent deal will be key, the links between Luca Stephenson and Swansea City certainly make sense for both parties. It’s a transfer rumour that Swans fans will be watching with keen interest as the summer window progresses.
