Hughes had long been on Roger’s ‘wanted list’ to appear in the match and at one stage was considering the possibility of bringing his Welsh squad to the Vetch instead. However, with Chelsea’s acceptance of the game, the invitation went back out to Mark last week and he has agreed that he will turn out for his former club.
Hughes of course has transformed the national side, who are now unbeaten in a record 10 games, and has led them to the top of their current Euro 2004 qualifying group after wins over Finland and Italy. There have also been two wins over Azerbaijan but it appears that these may be struck from the record after UEFA suspended the country yesterday for constant rule breaking.
Hughes’ name in the Chelsea line-up is sure to increase the crowds at the Vetch for the game and his name is added to the likes of Carlton Cole and Roberto Di Matteo who have already been pencilled in as part of the Chelsea side.
Roger will take to the pitch on the night with his two children, Dan and Lauren at his side, one kitted out in the black and white of Swansea, the other kitted out in the blue of Chelsea.
Also making an appearance in the match will be the lucky winner of the raffle that was organised with the first prize being 15 minutes in the game, standing in for Roger in the Swansea goal. We have now drawn the raffle and can reveal that the lucky winner is John Dunster who lives in Pennard. John will shortly be contacted to discuss his prize and we wish him all the best for his ’15 minutes of fame’
There will be other events on the night at the Vetch and don’t forget that you will also be able to get hold of a Roger Freestone testimonial brochure on the night as well as the match programme.
The draw of Premiership opposition at the Vetch should be a good one and I hope that people turn out in force to support a man who has remained as loyal as anyone to this club over the past decade.
