Swansea City saddened to hear of passing of Gordon Daniels

A tribute from his son Adam ...

"It is with both sadness and a great deal of gratitude for a life long lived that I inform you of the passing of my Dad, Gordon Daniels. Dad died earlier in the week at 94 years of age. For 25 of those years he was the Company Secretary/ General Manager at the Vetch Field working with many managers including Trevor Morris, Roy Bentley, Harry Gregg, Harry Griffiths and Tosh. He saw the ups and the downs of football life having to apply for re election to the football league in 1975 and of course successive promotions eventually to the First Division with the legendary day at Preston.

Dad was known as Gord to the players - or God - as he kept tight control of their expenses. The last time Dad, my brother Ian and I watched Swansea play Wyndham, Alan and Speedy all individually came up to him and asked where their expenses were! He also worked very closely with the local constabulary and that relationship saved several players a trip the station on a Monday morning after some ‘over’ celebrating at the weekend.

He loved the Club almost to a fault and when the business went into administration KPMG called him out as a great asset to the club. That was a low but Harry’s sudden death was the nadir for Dad. They were great pals and Dad missed Harry a great deal.

Dad loved working with the players, staff and Boards during his time. I benefitted from travelling to many amazing away games with Dad. It really was a window on another world for me and I have been grateful all my life for that.

So the expenses are all now paid and there is no need to ask Dad for any complementary tickets for the Liverpool game! The great turnstile has turned for the last time and the attendance figures have gone up by one up above!

Thanks for the memories Dad!

The funeral is most likely in early September. I will share details in case any of you knew Dad and would like to attend."
