It took both my parents when they were relatively young, horrible disease. People complain about the NHS these days, I remember a letter coming to the house requesting that my father atttend Singleton regarding a chest X-ray he’d had 12 months earlier, the problem was he’d been dead for 6 months.

Some really good points raised in the thread. In addition to the potential causes already suggested, there is also a potential hereditary risk from our parents genes. A mate of mine lost his wife to cancer in her 30s and it turns out that his daughter who is now in her 20’s has the same gene, nothing may come of it but the medical people are taking it seriously.

White males are at a 1 in 8 risk of developing prostate cancer at some point in their lives, sometimes it’s very slow developing and other times it can be quite aggressive. If your father, uncle or brother had it then the risk increases to a 1 in 3 chance - my dad had it so I’m at a higher risk. Hope nobody minds me posting this link and recommending everyone to check it out.

Lastly, I’ll mention bowel cancer screening (50 to 70 years) as this something I know about through work. The uptake rate on this is around 65%, so 1 in 3 who get the kit through the post don’t do the test. It’s really easy to do and there’s no cause for not doing it. The husband of someone I know through work (who ally 50’s ) had a kit but wasn’t going to bother as he didn’t have any symptoms etc but his wife nagged him so he relented and did it. He had a call a week or so later as it was positive! He subsequently got called in to hospital and had an op and he’s now sorted. If he hadn’t done the test it would have been a lot worse.

My dad had prostate cancer which then turned out that he had a brain tumour as well. He passed away in 1995.
My mother had breast cancer and had a single mastectomy and got over that. Lived for another 30 years.
My sister recently found out she had breast cancer but luckily had a lumpectomy and is now clear.
I get a PSA test every so often and check my tackle for abnormalities often and sent off every bowel test I’ve ever received.
Obviously there is a family history so I check everything whenever possible.



Look after yourselves guys and get checked as often as possible, and also all you ladies out there, get checked.

I seem to be surrounded by prostrate cancer at the moment, with my Dad waiting for tests and results amongst loads of others. It's incredibly common but also very treatable in a lot of cases, especially in older blokes. Don't be ashamed, make that appointment.

I also bumped in to my late friends Dad on a dog walk today, he's receiving Chemo for colon cancer 20 years after Leukaemia took his son.

Don't ignore symptoms, get them checked.
